Additionality
A project is additional if its outcomes would not have happened without the incentive from CR-I. Micro-scale projects, and some small-scale projects, are automatically additional.
What additionality means
A project is additional if its reductions or removals would not have happened without the financial incentive from CR-I, and go beyond the baseline scenario.
Demonstrating additionality
The project proponent demonstrates additionality using the Carbon Standard, the applied methodology and the relevant tools, including CDM and CR-I tools. Values used must be conservative and cross-checked.
Automatic additionality
| Project | Automatically additional when |
|---|---|
| Micro scale | Always, in any sector, with any measure, in any location. |
| Small scale in India | The state or union territory’s score in the latest NITI Aayog SDG India Index is below the national average. |
| Small scale outside India | The country’s score in the latest SDSN Sustainable Development Report index is below India’s. |
The DPD must cite the relevant sections of the Carbon Standard when it claims automatic additionality.
What the VVB checks
The VVB checks the references used, that the correct procedure was followed, that values are conservative, and that any claim of automatic additionality is valid.
