Which methodologies can be used?

Projects can use methodologies approved and listed by CR-I, and methodologies and tools approved under the UN Clean Development Mechanism, within the scope of the Carbon Standard.

MethodologiesLast reviewed 23 October 2026

Accepted methodologies

  • CR-I methodologies approved and listed by the Registry, whether new, pre-approved from another programme, or revised.
  • CDM methodologies and tools approved or listed under the Clean Development Mechanism, unless the project type is excluded.

LCA-based methodologies

Since version 1.1, a methodology can be built on Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) principles, backed by a Life Cycle Assessment verified by a third party under ISO 14044. The baseline can use an approved LCA value, reductions are quantified with an approved EPD value, and the methodology is not assessed by VVBs.

Using a methodology

  • Use the latest valid version, quoting its reference number, title and version in the DPD.
  • Show that the project meets the methodology’s applicability conditions.
  • Limited deviations are allowed.

Withdrawn methodologies

A methodology withdrawn by its developer cannot be used for new projects. Projects already registered with it can continue. Older versions of a revised methodology may stay listed while they are in use.

Proposing a methodology

Any institute, organisation or legal entity with demonstrable expertise in the sector can propose one as an Independent Methodology Developer. See Approval of a new methodology.
