Excluded project types
Carbon Standard v1.1 excludes nine kinds of project, including most hydropower, renewable energy that claims RECs, fossil-fuel generation and HFC-23 destruction.
The exclusion list
Under Carbon Standard v1.1, these projects cannot be registered:
- Hydropower, except micro-scale run-of-river systems.
- Projects that are required by an existing legal mandate.
- Renewable energy projects that claim, or have claimed, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) or a similar benefit.
- Energy-efficiency measures adopted by Designated Consumers under the Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme.
- Transboundary projects, for example a plant in Nepal supplying electricity to India.
- Fossil-fuel energy generation, fossil-fuel efficiency improvements, or fuel switching between fossil fuels. End-user measures such as improved cookstoves are not excluded.
- HFC-23 destruction or emission reduction.
- Grid-connected renewable energy in areas where renewables already exceed 51% of the energy mix.
- Projects that increased emissions without a matching increase in output, and then cut emissions back to the original or a lower level through the Registry.
The exclusion list in Carbon Standard v1.1 replaces the list in version 1.0. If a project type is borderline, ask the Registry before you start: cri.projects@nccf.in.
