Scope: sectors, gases and geography
CR-I accepts projects anywhere in the world, covers the six Kyoto Protocol greenhouse gases, and uses the sectoral scopes of the UN Clean Development Mechanism.
Geography
Projects anywhere in India or elsewhere in the world are eligible, provided they use an approved methodology and meet all Registry rules. Methodologies and tools can come from legal entities in India or abroad.
Project types
CR-I covers both single Project Activities (PA) and Programmes of Activities (PoA). Both are called “projects”.
Greenhouse gases
Six gases are covered: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6).
Sectoral scopes
CR-I follows the sectoral scopes of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Every project, methodology and tool must fall within one or more of them:
- Energy industries (renewable and non-renewable)
- Energy distribution
- Energy demand
- Manufacturing industries
- Chemical industry
- Construction
- Transport
- Mining and mineral production
- Metal production
- Fugitive emissions from fuels (solid, oil and gas)
- Fugitive emissions from halocarbons and sulphur hexafluoride
- Solvent use
- Waste handling and disposal
- Afforestation and reforestation
- Agriculture
- Carbon capture and storage
Under Carbon Standard v1.1, afforestation and reforestation also covers improved forest management, grassland management and mangrove plantations.
Some project types are excluded even within these scopes. See Excluded project types.
